WINE CELLAR WEDNESDAYS
Sicily, Italy
3/18/26
Wine Cellar Wednesday heads to Sicily this week, with a lineup that captures the island’s sunny energy, coastal freshness, and bold Mediterranean character. Expect bright citrus, wild herbs, juicy red fruit, and the kind of savory depth that makes Sicilian wines so distinctive and food-friendly. From crisp and vibrant whites to expressive, easygoing reds, this is a tasting that shows why Sicily has become one of Italy’s most exciting wine regions. Join us to explore four bottles that bring a little sunshine and southern Italian charm to the glass.

Gurrieri, Grillo Bianco 2024
(Sicilia DOC, Sicily, Italy)
A bright, coastal-feeling Grillo that leans into freshness without losing its sunny Sicilian charm: think lemon peel, green apple, and a little white peach, with broom flower, soft tropical notes, and a gentle herbal lift over a salty mineral edge. The palate is light to medium bodied and crisp, with lively acidity and a nice balance of roundness and snap that keeps it feeling refreshing rather than sharp. There’s a subtle smoky note underneath the fruit that gives it a little extra complexity, and the finish stays clean, citrusy, and quietly savory. Easy to love, super versatile, and exactly the kind of white that overdelivers at the table.

Cantine Barbera, Fuoristrada Frappato 2021
(Menfi DOC, Sicily, Italy)
A vivid, energetic Frappato with that lifted Sicilian personality that makes the grape so appealing: juicy cherry, pomegranate, and red berry fruit up front, with violet, rose petal, mint, and a little pink pepper spice that keeps everything feeling bright and alive. The palate is light to medium bodied, with soft tannins, distinct acidity, and a graceful, almost crunchy freshness that makes it incredibly drinkable. There’s a blood-orange note that adds extra zip, and the whole wine feels floral, savory, and just a little unexpected in the best way. Chill it slightly and it absolutely sings.

Cantina Barbera, Lucori Nero d’Avola 2024
(Menfi DOC, Sicily, Italy)
A juicy, medium-bodied Nero d’Avola that shows the variety’s darker side without getting heavy: mulberry, raspberry, and ripe cherry lead the way, followed by violet, sweet spice, and a distinctly saline note that gives it real Sicilian character. The palate is soft and velvety, with delicate tannins and enough freshness to keep the fruit feeling lively rather than plush. There’s a faint earthy, almost briny savoriness running through it that makes it more interesting than a straightforward fruit bomb, and the finish is persistent, spicy, and smooth. Approachable and crowd-pleasing, but with enough personality to hold your attention.

Le Fontane, Cerasuolo di Vittoria 2022
(Cerasuolo di Vittoria Classico DOCG, Sicily, Italy)
A beautifully balanced Sicilian red that lands right between fragrant and structured: red cherry, wild strawberry, and pomegranate come first, with violet, Mediterranean herbs, and a subtle earthy note that adds depth without weighing it down. The palate is medium bodied and wonderfully poised, bringing together the juicy brightness you want from Frappato with the firmer shape and savory grounding of Nero d’Avola. Fine tannins and fresh acidity keep it moving, while the finish lingers with red fruit, herbs, and a clean stony edge. Elegant, expressive, and one of those reds that feels equally easygoing and serious.
